Garden dormice are native to a diverse set of habitats, most of which feature exposed stone and rocks.

In southern and south-western Germany, the garden dormice calls forests home (e.g. Hunsrück, Bavarian Forest), but can also be found in gardens, vineyards and orchards. On some occasions, these urban areas host quite high population densities.

In Mid and East Germany the dormouse mainly lives in the higher altitudes of low mountains that are dominated by spruce forests.
