Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) /
Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND)

The BUND federal association is responsible for nationwide volunteer management and nationwide public relations work. The state associations Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia with their respective local districts are regionally active and support the project, for example in monitoring and implementation of conservation measures.

The Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND) is dedicated to the protection of our nature and environment – so that the earth remains habitable for all who live on it. The BUND works at all levels, from regional to federal, and is supported by around 593,000 people: there are over 2,000 voluntary BUND groups nationwide that directly tackle the issues that are important in their region.

Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)

A team of scientists from the Clinic of Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians and Fishes and the working group on Wildlife Biology with dormice experts Sven Büchner, Holger Meinig and Johannes Lang are involved on the part of the JLU. The JLU conducts research on the garden dormouse, develops a conservation concept and advises the BUND in all functional matters.

Founded in 1607, the Justus Liebig University in Giessen is a traditional research university that attracts more than 28,000 students. In addition to a wide range of courses – from classical natural sciences, law and economics, social sciences and educational sciences to linguistic and cultural studies – it offers a spectrum of life sciences that is unique not only in Hesse: human and veterinary medicine, agricultural, environmental and nutritional sciences as well as food chemistry.

Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN)

The genetic investigations of the garden dormouse samples, the investigation of the distribution of chromosomal and evolutionary lines in garden dormouse and the development of the gene database are carried out by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung .

The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung is one of the largest research institutions in the field of biological diversity and comprises six research institutes and three natural history museums. In the field of nature conservation genetics, native wildlife species are studied using modern molecular genetic analysis methods in order to record the effects of rapid man-made environmental changes on animal species. Basic research and genetic wildlife monitoring comes together to support practical species conservation and wildlife science. The Department of Conservation Genetics is, among other things, a reference centre for the nationwide genetic monitoring of wolves and lynx in Germany.
